Frugal Friday Post- Saving Money In 2012-Homemade Fabric Softener

As one of my New Year's Resolutions to be more frugal, I am looking for ways to cut costs on home cleaning products. I have shared recipes for Homemade Laundry Detergent and now it's time for DIY Fabric Softener! I just ran out of the store bought softener, so now I am extremely excited to try this out!

Aside from being a natural softener, vinegar also removes soap residue in the washing machine and reduces static in the dryer. You can add vinegar directly to laundry during the rinse cycle or pour vinegar into the fabric softener dispenser of your washing machine.

You can pre-mix your fabric-softening vinegar by using the following recipe:

Homemade Fabric Softener
*1 gallon white vinegar
*20-30 drops essential oil (Lavender, Orange, Lemon and Peppermint(15 drops as it's stronger) are good choices)

Sweet orange brightens and fights stains, lavender offers a calming effect, and peppermint can help fight tough odors on clothing.

Frugal Friday Tip- Cut Drying Time With A Dry Towel!

I'm sure that there are many people like myself that can't afford one of those fancy washer and dryer sets that are on the market nowadays! They say they can steam, cut drying time, iron and probably make a really great quiche in just a few minutes;) Well that would be great...if I could afford it, but I can't!

So thanks to my mom who gave me this tip that she read and tried out on her own! She doesn't have one of those fancy machines either and she swears this works!

*Add a dry towel to a load of wet clothes when you put them in the dryer. It says it cuts drying time which equals money saved on your electricity bill and more time to make that homemade quiche!

Frugal Friday Post- What Can I Freeze In The Freezer?

When I was chosen as a Deal Pro for Savings.com in 2009, I went to the conference and was surprised that a chef was chosen as a Deal Pro! However, it completely made sense after he gave a presentation on using your freezer as a tool to save money. Don't waste anything, as more than likely you can freeze it and use it for a later time/purpose, saving you money in the long road.
So, I've been talking about several things you can freeze during my coupon classes but wanted to give a more detailed list with some explanations. Feel free to add your two cents about what has worked/not worked for you and add anything to the list that I haven't thought of or heard about!

First let's talk about the most common freezing methods:

Flash Freeze- This works especially well for fruits and cookie doughs in my opinion. First, cut up your fruit and make your cookie dough into balls. Then stick them on a parchment or waxed paper lined cookie sheet and stick in the freezer until firm. Then simply store in Freezer Storage bags.

Freezing food as quickly as possible to as low a temperature as possible leads to smaller ice crystals, less damage to the cell walls of the food when it thaws, and better flavor. Because of this it is better to cut items such as meat into smaller pieces if possible. The smaller the portion the faster it freezes.

Vegetables are a little bit trickier. According to Alton Brown, he suggests blanching your vegetables, like peas, in boiling water for one minute and immediately shocking them in an ice bath for another minute to neutralize the enzymes. Dry them thoroughly, then lay them out in a single layer on a sheet pan and and refrigerate them for an hour before transferring the sheet pan to the freezer.

Just Stick It In The Freezer- Sometimes it depends on how you want to freezer something depending on what it will be used for later. Take bananas for example. I simply throw the entire banana into the freezer because I use these for breads, cakes and smoothies where the consistency doesn't really make a difference. Sometimes this requires to thaw out a little bit ahead of time or stick in the microwave, but it still works great.

So now let's look at my list of foods that you can freeze:

Milk- You heard it right. I have been doing this for years. I have done all kinds too and have never had problems. Some people let out a little milk before freezing it, but I never have. Sure the sides pop out a little but that's about it. We go through milk like crazy so I don't need to worry about it expiring, but if you do, just write down the date you put it in the freezer and then write the day you take it out. The amount of time before it expires will remain the same.
Cheese- will work better if it's shredded or sliced ahead of time.
Fruit- There are some tricks to freezing fruit. Most need to be flash frozen and whether to wash beforehand or after freezing is up for debate. I wouldn't recommend washing blueberries beforehand for sure!
Vegetables- I got a great tip one time to store all your spoonfuls of left over vegetables in a freezer bag in your freezer and keep adding to it until you can make a vegetable soup with it!

Pies- freeze before you cook

Marshmallows

Already Made Pancakes and Waffles
Prepared Pizza Dough-Just thaw before preparing

Yogurt- We mostly freeze those yogurt tubes. The baby LOVES frozen yogurt when he's teething!
Nuts
Leftover Spaghetti Sauce, Paste
Opened Wine- store in ice cube trays and then transfer to freezer bags. Use in stews, sauces, etc.
Eggs- cracked
Brown Rice (uncooked)
Fresh Herbs- Chop up what is left over, put in ice cube trays covered with water and freeze. Then transfer to bags and use in recipes.
Chopped Onion, Peppers
Chili
Casseroles

Saving Money in 2012- Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipes And Tips

In a quest to cut my spending, I am going to be looking for creative/homemade/simple ways of saving money. I have been wanting to make my own cleaners for a long time now and I am finally ready to start! It seems like many of my readers are wanting to do the same thing, so I am going to start with Homemade Laundry Detergent.

There are many recipes you can find and after reading through comments, it looks like there are some tips to help you get the best experience. I am going to share a few recipes and tips to help you start. Please add your own recipes and comments to help us out!

Helpful Tips:

Washing Soda and Borax can normally be found in the laundry and cleaning aisles.
For the bar soaps required in the recipes, you could try Fels-Naptha, Ivory soap, and Zote. Don’t use heavily perfumed soaps. Most say Fels-Naptha get clothes the cleanest!
You can make large batches of this at once, or smaller quantities.Grab a few empty liquid laundry detergent bottles! They work great for storing the detergent. Just make a big batch and pour in bottles, cap then use as needed–shake before use.
Use some Oxy-Clean powder with heavily soiled loads or pretreat stains if things are really dirty.
Don’t be off-put by the consistency. It comes out pretty much like snot. Very goopy!
Great for hunters as there is no scent!
Make sure and check your lint trap in your dryer. If you use fabric softener sheets they can cause a buildup and basically clog your trap. To check, clean the trap and then put it under your sink faucet. If the water doesn't go through it's clogged. Just clean it with soap and water and check again! Voila!

The Duggar's Laundry Soap Recipe
4 Cups - hot tap water
1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup - Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda*
½ Cup Borax

- Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)

-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

-Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)

-Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)

*Arm & Hammer "Super Washing Soda" - in some stores or may be purchased online here (at Meijer.com). Baking Soda will not work, nor will Arm & Hammer Detergent - It must be sodium carbonate!

Comments:
-Whites don't seem like they get white. They seem dingy.
-I make the powdered version — adding a cup of color safe bleach (Purex or Clorox 2) made a huge difference. The whites are white now!

Simple Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe

If you’re interested in making your own laundry detergent, my favorite (and the easiest) recipe is for powdered laundry detergent.

Grate 1/2 bar Fels Naptha soap (or you can try other soaps) in a food processor.
Add 1 cup Borax,
1 cup Washing Soda, and,
1 cup Baking soda.
Process until mixed.

That’s it. It takes 5 minutes. Use about 2 tablespoons per full load of laundry. You’ll be surprised at how little detergent it takes to get your clothes clean!

Homemade Laundry Soap Ingredients

1 whole bar soap
1 cup washing soda
1/2 cup borax
3 gallons/4 cups warm water

Begin by pouring 4 cups of water into a medium sized pot to boil.
While waiting for your water to boil grate as much soap as you plan to use, this can be done by hand or in a food processor.
Add grated soap to pot and stir until dissolved fully.
Add 3 gallons of warm/hot water to a 5 gallon bucket.
Add your pot of soapy brew to the 5 gallon bucket.
Add 1 cup of washing soda and stir for 2 minutes with a large long handled strong spoon.
Once your washing soda is dissolved and well mixed in, add 1/2 cup of borax and stir for 2-3 minutes to dissolve and mix well.
At this point you can add your fragrance if you so desire. We love good smelling things at our house and so I like to add a little extra yummy smell – this time I chose a sandalwood amber fragrance oil.
Pop the lid on tight and let it sit overnight.

This is where the magic happens. In the morning you will open your bucket to 3 gallons of gelled glop – it will smell great, it will clean your clothes but the consistency will be a little watery and a gloppy – that is perfectly ok.

Use 1/2 cup per load.

Meal Plan Monday- Crockpot Week!

School has started, soccer has started, and our schedule just seems to get busier and busier! So, this week I am going to be cooking in the crockpot!

I know many moms (or dads) are in the same situation and crockpot cooking has seemed to be in a lot of conversations I have heard this weekend. So, here is my crockpot menu for this week! It is going to be so nice to not worry about getting supper started in the evening when the baby wants a nap, when my oldest needs to get ready for his soccer game and when I am starting to feel my energy get zapped!

Mexican Cream Cheese Chicken- I just recently found Crockpot Girls on Facebook and I am enjoying all the recipes and ideas the members are sharing! This recipe comes from them, so you may have to "Like" their page to get to this recipe!

Slow Cooker Meatballs- Just throw some noodles on the stove when you get home and it's a meal!

Sausage and Egg Breakfast Casserole- This reminds me of the casserole we eat on Christmas morning! Going to have to try this!

Slow Cooker Pork Chops- This looks really good! I think it will go great with some veggies and mashed potatoes!

Applesauce Chicken- I have applesauce in my refrigerator that needs to be used, so this is perfect timing!

Ham and Pineapple- This is a family favorite which usually gets cooked in the oven until warm. I am just going to throw it in the crockpot on low until warmed! Serve with mashed potatoes! Yummy!

Only 6 dinners this week, as we have a family celebration this Saturday! I love it when I don't have to cook!! Everyone have a great week and a great Labor Day Weekend!!!

This week my pocketbook is stretched to the limit. August is a horrible month for us! With back to school, a birthday, tags and taxes due and a HUGE electric bill thanks to almost a whole month of temps over 100 degrees, there isn't much room left for anything else. So, we are being very strict about our meal planning and going to make use of our pantry and freezer items we already have!

Here is what we are having for dinner this week...oh and BACK TO SCHOOL for us on Thursday! I'm just a little excited!

BBQ Cups- These are like Sloppy Joes except you add bbq sauce, ketchup and a little brown sugar to your hamburger and then serve over biscuits!

Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Baked Beans, Chips

Sandwiches (Peanut Butter/Jelly or Turkey) I know...we're fancy!

Frugal Friday Tip- Don't Throw Those Nectarines Away!

I type the words, Don't Throw Away, out of shame. You see, I just threw 3 rotten nectarines away, wasting about $2.00. I could have done quite a bit with that $2.00. I could have rented 2 movies. I could have went and bought my kids ice cream after their first day of school, or even paid for a shirt on clearance at Target. But instead, I threw it away! *Smacking myself on the forehead*

So, out of frustration, I give you this Friday's Frugal Tip- Don't Throw Anything Away!

Here are some ideas of what you can do with that one potato you have leftover or those 3 nectarines that aren't quite ready to throw away! *Smacking myself on the forehead once again*

*Have a few vegetables leftover from dinner? Take them and put them in a gallon size freezer bag. Keep adding those leftover vegetables until you have enough in your bag to make vegetable soup or to add to your roast!

*Potatoes- Shred them up to make hash browns!

*Fruit- cut up, flash freeze and bag them up. Use for smoothies or in pancakes!

*Bananas gone brown? Just stick them in the freezer. You decide if you want to cut up or just stick the whole thing in...it doesn't matter!

*Bread-use day old bread for croutons!

*Juice from Canned Fruit- freeze in ice cube tray and use for smoothies! (Thanks Annette)

*Pasta Sauce- freeze it and use for that next spaghetti dinner!

*Onions and Peppers- chop them up, freeze them and then just break off how much you need!

Frugal Friday-When School Supplies Go On Clearance!

Part of the fun of the beginning of school is going shopping for those brand new school supplies, clothes, shoes, etc. However, fun doesn't mean the same thing as frugal! So, how can you save money but still get the "new" feeling that comes with back to school shopping?

Most school provide a school supply list with all the grades listed. This list doesn't change much from year to year. When all the back to school items go on clearance or get extremely cheap (think packs of pencils for a penny), buy several packages for the next year. You will always be buying glue sticks, pencils, crayons, erasers, etc. Keep them in a tub for easy access to have when the teacher asks your children to bring in replacements as well!

Then, next year pull the tub out, set up a store and have your kids "shop" for the items off their list. There may be a few items you have to find on sale but the remainder of your items should have only cost you a few dollars compared to what it would have been! Anything leftover can be put in an art tub or donated to your child's classroom!

Contacting Companies For Coupons- Who Will Send Them?

Do you have a favorite product but can't seem to ever find coupons for them? Go ahead and contact the company and see if they have any they could send!

Most companies have a website where you can go and find the Contact Us Tab somewhere on their homepage. This will generally take you to an email form for you to ask questions, report a problem, enter contact information, etc. In the body, where you write to the company, I always give them a compliment and then at the end ask if they have any coupons for their consumers. Here is an example of an email I sent to Huggies:

"I would just like to thank Huggies for making products that I can rely on for my baby's sensitive skin. We only use Huggies wipes and knowing they will not irritate his eczema skin is so reassuring! I was wondering if you ever mail out coupons to consumers to make them more cost effective for my family? Thanks You for your time and your products."

Teacher Appreciation Week is this week and I think it is very important to express to your child's teacher that you appreciate everything they do! Now, as most of you know, I was a teacher in my former life. I taught 1st and 2nd grade for 7 years and enjoyed almost every minute of it! I don't think anyone, except fellow teachers, understands what teachers do everyday or the obstacles they have to face. It's not about going to work, teaching and then having a loooong Summer Break. It's hard and teachers are some of the most amazing people I know!

So, take a minute to do something for a teacher...no matter how little or big it is!

Here are some ideas that I personally love!

*A Letter-I think my best gift was a mother who wrote me a long letter thanking me for everything. It made me cry and realize why I do what I do. Sometimes teachers go unnoticed, especially good ones. To know people, especially parents are noticing how great you are is indescribable!

*Something Personal- I'm not talking about something with the teacher's name, although nice. I am talking about getting your teacher a Starbucks gift card because she brings in coffee from there everyday. Or maybe a new plant because she told you how much she likes to garden. It shows that you are listening and care to get to know them!

*Books- I love books and think almost every teacher does! Make it more special by having the student write a note in the book so the teacher can always remember whenever they read that book!

*Gift Certificate to a Teacher Supply Store- Teachers spend their own money on their classrooms! Usually they only get a small budget and that budget could maybe last a few months if you are lucky! I spent hundreds of dollars every year out of my own pocketbook! This is nice because the teacher can get things they need without paying for it!

*Framed Poem- One year I also got a special poem in a frame. It was so sweet and I enjoyed hanging it in my room.

~No matter how little or small, your teacher will love anything you get them. It is the thought that counts and teachers are easy to make happy!

I am starting to no longer frown while walking into my Wal-Mart store! Those Wal-Mart happy faces are exactly how I am starting to feel about the new policies and the ways Wal-Mart is becoming extremely Coupon Friendly (finally)!

It was confirmed to me today that Wal-Mart will now take coupons *20 days past their expiration dates! Yippee! That's even longer than the 14 days Dillon's now (sometimes) accepts!

*Call your store to double check their policy on this as I am not sure if it is a corporate or a store policy~

Also, I have now done price matching twice without an ad and have had NO problems and extremely nice cashiers!!!

There was also a $0.75/1 coupon in a recent P&G coupon mailer that came to me yesterday! This will double to $1.00, making it FREE also!

This is where having multiple copies of inserts come in handy! And remember-if your store is out, ask for a rain check and since the coupons expire on Saturday, tell them you want to be able to use the coupon when they come back in stock! Hopefully they will be nice and staple them with a manager's approval!

Cheap Milk? Freeze It!

I remember walking across the street in my little hometown many moons ago and getting a gallon of milk for $1.59 (or something close to that)! Milk has now doubled since then and now that I have three boys and a cookie and milk-a-holic husband...well, we spend a LOT of money on milk!

Dillon's has their 1/2 gallons this week for just $1.00! This is stockpile price for me! Concerned that you won't get through all those milks by their expiration date? Freeze Them! Yep you heard me right!!!

I have been freezing milk for awhile now. Whenever I find an amazing deal on milk I grab a few to throw in the freezer. So how do you do it and does it taste good (I know that's the big question)!

First, you want to write the date that you put the milk in the freezer with a permanent marker. When you thaw it out, write that date down as well. You have the same number of days until it expires that you would have had without freezing it. So, if you put it in the freezer on May 1st and it expires May 11th, when you take it out on August 5th, you have until August 15th until it expires.

Some people let out a little milk to allow room to expand but I never have and (knock on wood) I have never had a mess or one explode! I have mostly frozen 2% and Vitamin D milk but I have heard some people say all milk freezes well and I have heard others say NEVER freeze Skim!

Now, thawing it out will take a few days in the freezer! So, when to take the milk out of the freezer is something to consider depending how fast you go through it! I can't taste a difference and the only thing that may be different is there could be a few ice crystals for awhile until it is truly thawed but it is worth it at how much money we are saving!

It will pay to try this for yourself! Let me know if you've tried it before and how well it worked for you!

One of the best deals is their $5.00 packages of diapers. There is a limit of 4 per customer. This is the same price they have them on the Day After Thanksgiving!!

Another good deal I see is to save $10.00 on a $50.00 or more purchase of formula. Since this is a store coupon after it rings up and takes the $10.00 off you should be able to use Manufacturer coupons to match up with what you purchase! With the $5.00 Similac coupons still floating around this could be a great deal! You could even see if they will take your Similac checks with this deal too!

I am on a mission to lose weight! I am now 10 pounds lighter than when I became pregnant and trying to lose another 20 pounds! My husband and I sat down and decided that we were willing to spend more on groceries for a little while so that our WHOLE family can eat healthier! Dillons Changes E-Coupon Policy!

Dillon's recently changed their E-Coupon Policy and after going there today and witnessing it first hand, I thought I would explain the changes for everyone!

Before you could download digital coupons to your plus card and then still use a paper coupon at the end of your transaction for the same product you were using a digital coupon for.

However, they will no longer let you "stack" both.

**The online coupon will always take priority over the paper coupon.

You will now have to pay close attention to which is the greater savings (e-coupon or paper coupon) and then make sure to delete the e-coupon off your Dillon's card so that it does not over-ride a higher saving paper coupon.

I love my next giveaway! I don't know if this is TMI, but with my second child I was stuck breastfeeding for 13 months! Long story but he refused a bottle. He would scream and scream and did I say scream? I was a stay at home mom so I just suffered through it. But I couldn't be anywhere for longer than 3 hours and it was such an inconvenience! I had no social life and I was very depressed.

So when it was time for Baby #3, I knew that if I breastfed we were starting with a bottle from Day 1! I spent lots of time researching bottles that got good reviews for the purpose of bottle to breast without difficulties! I ran across the Innobaby bottle and thought it was great! I contacted the company and they gave me a couple of products to try and review!

The Nursin' Smart bottle is silicone, so it is soft and almost feels like a mother's breast! It has a nipple that is shaped like a mother's nipple and it has a wide base for the baby to latch onto. Parker did really well with it. Now, I will admit that we aren't breastfeeding anymore and we aren't using the bottle right now because we had such an issue with colic and gas that we switched to Dr. Brown's. I have no idea if it even matters but at the time I was doing what I felt was right! I can say that Parker did do well with it though and switched back and forth for the time that we used it.

I also reviewed the Packin' Smart Zoo Animal container. It is first and foremost cute! I love how it is compact and just the right size to throw in the diaper bag. I have used it mostly for formula or to hold snacks.

I got these as we were really getting into potty training! I thought he could wear them when we started trying underwear at night. They are very soft, nicely padded and I didn't think there would be a problem with them. However, my incredibly OCD child refused to put them on! They were not the right ones and he would throw a fit whenever I tried! So, all I can say is they got really good online reviews!

I am so excited that Wichita has finally gotten a Menards! I have never been to one and don't know much about them, but I am still so excited! I pulled up their website and found their coupon policy online (score for them)! If you shop at Menards tell all us newbies about it! I will post more about my experience after I hopefully go there this weekend!

Frugal Friday Tip- $2.48 Window Treatment!

We bought our home in October and I am just now getting around to decorating other parts of the house besides the nursery! Every room needs painted, but that is a task for people that don't have a 6 week old colicky baby keeping them up! So for now, just decorating the plain jane white rooms will do!

I am decorating in my favorite "Shabby Antique Chic" look, which I love!!! I could spend all day in antique stores!!! So my husband gave me a little money and I have been having fun. I will post pics up when I get done!

I wanted a unique window treatment and couldn't find anything online, but I ran across some napkins on clearance at Target and thought...I can do something with those!

So, for $2.48 and a tension rod I already had, this is what I came up with! Pretty impressed at myself!

Frugal Friday Post- Frugal Bottle Warmer!

It's amazing the gadgets they have now for babies! It's all about convenience and making it seem like you just "have" to "HAVE" it!

One day when I was out shopping pre-baby and getting last minute things, I headed over to the bottle warmers. I was asking the sales lady at a baby chain store if she had any experience with bottle warmers...as I had none! I was thinking it might come in handy for those early morning/late night feedings when I can barely see straight, let alone warm a bottle! It's then when she said...just use a crockpot! "What...a crockpot?" I said as my frugal ears were now on fire!!! So, she explained it to me, and I thought it was genius!

So, what you do is put some water in a crockpot and set it on high to get warm. It will take a few hours. When it is at the right temp just set on low or stay warm depending how your crockpot heats. Then stick a bottle of just water in and let it sit and get warm. Then when feeding time comes, pull it out and add formula! Not only is it that easy but it also humidifies your house!

You don't have to use a large crockpot for this, it's just all I have!
